Gadget Freaks Gadget Regurge !

Isn’t it really annoying when you sit down for your favourite sitcom and it’s as if they’ve run out of ideas and you get a  regurgative ‘ walk down memory lane’ type show. You know like on Seinfeld when they sit around and Jerry says,” Hey remember the time Elaine and Peterman……….” And 30 minutes of cliche ridden segways follows to hightlights from past episodes!  I think you get the idea. Almost as bad as the retro nostalgic trend to remake movies of the classic 60’s TV shows like Get Smart and The Thunderbirds!

Anyway despair not! Today here at Gadget Freaks we thought we’d take a look at some of the more interesting gadgets we’ve reviewed to celebrate our 3 month anniversary here on WordPress.

Retro and nosltalgic in itself, this USB powered mini-fridge is just the ticket now that summer is well on its way. Styled on a 1950’s refrigerator, it has hot and cold controls and is just perfect for cooling a can on a hot day whilst watching Moto GP or something just as cool.

Staying on a retro theme, we really loved this MP 3 cassette player. Shaped like and old tape it is in fact an MP 3 gadget you can actually use in and old cassette player. Roll out all those 70’s hits and impress your younger friends who may have never seen such a thing!

Ah and who could forget our post and review on the 2008 Ducati Desmosedici GP 8 Moto GP bike. With its V4 Fourstroke 799cc motor pumping out 200+ horsepower weighing 148(dry) kg and hitting a top speed in excess of 310 kmh it surely is the ultimate gadget.

Anyway that’s it for our walk down memory lane. If you missed any of our past posts take your own retro read of our gizmo & gadgets reviews and race previews. Stay tuned for new any interesting gadgets and news right here on WordPress!

From Sundial To Seiko.

The history of telling time is perhaps as old as time itself. Early humans used the position of the sun at any given time of day to get an idea of where they were in the day. Of course not very accurate but then again they really didn’t have to be anywhere at a specific time.

Then some bright spark must have been watching shadows cast by the sun and sometime around 5500 years ago the sundial was created. Those early timepeices would evolve until some 4800 years later the word clock (from the Latin for Bell, ‘Clocca’) first appeared in the 14th century.

Nowadays we have an amazing diversity in clocks as the human love affair and fascination for time pieces continues. However, not all clock lovers are after the latest in technology. Take this Retro Flip down Desk Clock. With its Steampunk inspired design it is an extremely cool looking clock with real gear driven mechanisms. Very gadgety indeed !

If you are anything like us at Gadget Freaks, getting up in the morning can sometimes be somewhat difficult. It is said that the average amount of sleep for any one individual is just 5 minutes more. Problem is that this can sometimes turn into an hour. If this sounds like you well check this out. The Sonic Boom SBD375ss Alarm Clock has a dual alarm system for multiple alarm time settings and an earsplitting 113db of sound power to get your day started with a bang. And if that doesn’t get you up and about the SBD375ss comes with a powerful 12 volt bedshaker. Kind of like your own personal earthquake zone. You’ll never be late for work again.

One from the ‘If you have to ask you couldn’t afford it’ file is this awesome chronograph from Zenith. The Limited Edition El Primero Zero-G Multi-Dimensional Turbillion watch has been inspired by the US Stealth Aircraft and is constructed from exotic materials such as kevlar. Coated with a unique PVD ( Physical Vapour Deposition ) ,this watch is not only waterproof but also impervious to the effects of gravity. Designed with folk who experience high g-forces in their daily lives, the Zero-G is due for release this April and will cost around US$ 500,000 .

Now here’s a clock for the true geek. Telling the time on this baby is no easy task to the layman as it tells the time in binary. Using the coding of 32/16/8/4/2/1 this unusual item comes in silver and red. I wonder if the alarm bleats at you in fax code?

And just for a little gratuitous glam here is a neat little alarm clock come calender. Easy on the eye this unit is also a digital photo frame. Woo hoo!

Back to The Future – Retromania!

with one comment

Do you love gadgets but long for the style of old when things were made to last. Televisions made of wood and steel, bakelite radios? Remember when things were heavy, big and bulky? Well like all things everything old is new again. Retro gadgets are now bigtime. Some are way cool and functional but some just make you ask, “Why?” However,I must admit to being just a little more than fascinated with the genre as a whole.

It’s like talking to a kid about the days before the internet or explaining the intricate use of an old dial phone. If you equate technological advancement over time it all does seem like a long time ago. Just shy of the industrial revolution according to one young dude I recently spoke with. But never fear Retro Gadgets are here and it’s not just the old schoolers getting into them.

One set of Retro stuff that has caught the eye of we Gadget Freaks are these minature replicas of 1940’s style bakelite table radios. Although they only house an AM/FM radio (no MP3 here) they are still quite cool. A great gift for old and older school friends and family.

As I mentioned before the idea of large phones has been a laughing point for many in the past few years. Looking at old movies and TV shows and seeing all that old technology is quite a trip. The old handset with a curly cord and the brick mobiles of the 80’s can bring a wry smile to many young Gadgeteers. Well smile at this junior!!

What can you say about the Phobile ? I’m putting this one in the ‘Why Bin’. The Phobile is and old style handset equiped with Bluetooth technology. Yup! That’s right, get a call on your new high-tech cell phone and you can take the call on this vintage handset. One word……..!

bluetooth_retro_handset_withphone.jpgHowever, not all retro-gadgets are as perplexing and seemingly useless as some.Take this Cassette style MP3 player. It slots into any old cassette player to play your MP3 files giving new life to an old car or portable cassette system.

All I can say is….” Let The Good Times Roll.”
